AHA!! It wasn't the first - and only - fic stole!! She's defiled [livejournal.com profile] summer_of_giles as well!

Again, you can check out the various links at [livejournal.com profile] sheafrotherdon's LJ [here], but also check out one of her latest 'comments' [here] where she says 'thank you for telling me - i didn't know'. 'Didn't know' WHAT? That stealing other people's fic is wrong? Even if you do change the names to fit another fandom?

Seriously - *headdesk*!!!!!

ETA: Stolen Fic Count: 4 [details here]

Bonkers. Just plain bonkers.

I mean - okay - maybe you could do it once and not realise... But after you've been told - surely you would have learned, gone around grovellingly apologising and taken the fics you 'borrowed' down?

Still - it is kinda entertaining!

No doubt. It's entertaining in the 'I can't believe people are this clueless' way, rather than the 'OMG where has my night gone!' way, like Strikethrough was. (Maybe it's because there's not as much wank going on....)

I'm assuming that you're referring to some grammatical thing here, so I should tell you that I never actually studied formal grammar rules in school. Well, in english, anyway. I was in French immersion, and they were more concerned that I could correctly conjugate a verb and structure a sentence in French, than in english. Hence, my english grammar, punctuation and so forth, have all been derived from stuff I've read.

Which really explains why I have no idea how to correctly use a semi-colon or what's the difference between subjunctive or imperative, or present and past participle. (I can't even remember what they are in French.)

Thus, we've all discovered why I need grammatical betas occasionally.

And yes, take some aspirin and avoid all mention of idiot plagiarisers-(zers?). ::sigh::

maybe she "didn't know" because she's copied so many fics that she can't remember them all? I don't know what to think. The fact that she's deleted all the evidence makes me wonder if there weren't more stories she "borrowed."

I'm wondering if she thought 'I've changed the names and the fandom, so it's not copying' - which really wouldn't surprise me in the least. (That seems to be the consensus among high school and university-college students - 'if I change it just enough...'.)

And yeah, so far the tally is 2 fics and numerous manips she's done.

Gah, that's just ridiculous. Even in high school it was drilled into us that if you used someone else's words and just changed a little here and there, it was WRONG. And even if you didn't get caught, it was still WRONG. Using find/replace is NOT the same as writing a story.

Plagiarism and stealing/buying essays and term papers (among other things) is apparently running rampant through the schools now. Both high school and colleges. I noticed when I went back to school two years ago, that the professors are really pushing the 'copying is bad' message and specifically defining what plagiarism is, in precise terms.

It just boggled my mind for a while, because I never realised it was that big of a problem - university always had those 'doom' warnings, but nothing like there is today.

That's my thought too. Problem is, even those stories she DID write herself are now suspect anyway because the Internet is too vast to find every story ever written....and some does not seem to be 'searchable' anyway.

For instance...I tried doing a search on a paragraph from one of my own stories and it pulled up only ONE reference even though the story is in at least 3 places that I know of!

Well, a lot of sites have a robots.txt to keep them out of search engines - mine do, mostly because the email addresses were garnering too much spam.

I believe the count is now up to 4 confirmed fics, with a few more that can't quite be determined. (Out of curiosity, I found a google-cached version of a Jayne/Mal she 'wrote', and I'm laying money on it being from a different fandom. Either she has no concept of the characters and has never seen the show (due to the 'sliding doors' on the ship), or it's from another fandom. It had a definite McShep vibe to it.)

Perhaps you should put the gist of the story on [livejournal.com profile] sgastoryfinders to see if anyone recognizes it.
