lyl_devil: (claudia - made of awesome)
A little while ago, [livejournal.com profile] reena_jenkins asked if she could make my SPN/DA fic 'Familia Infortunium' into a podfic.

I said yes.

Then [livejournal.com profile] bessyboo made it into a podbook, complete with cover art.

It is totally fantastic!

Check it out here: Podbook: Familia Infortunium

Direct Archive link.

Go. Look. Listen. Then tell these amazing people how amazing they are.

:D
lyl_devil: (eliot - something wrong w that girl)
So we all have these stories in our head that you just know will be supremely awesome. You know you'll never write it yourself because you know for a fact that you will never do the idea justice, and it's going to be awesome or lame, with nothing in between, and you know you won't be able to reach awesome.

I'm talking about those story ideas that we all have, where we can't believe no one else has written it yet. You know in your heart that if it hasn't been written yet, then someone, somewhere, has got to be writing it, you just have to find it. (It's the only hope you cling to, because you seriously cannot be the only one in fandom who can see the potential.)

This is the Mythical Holy Grail of Fic.

Amazingly, I have found one.
(Yes, this is all prelude to a fic rec of awesome.)

I Lie, I Cheat, I Steal (and I Just Don't Get Any Respect) by fiercelydreamed
Leverage/White Collar - do I need to go into more detail? Really?
Summary: "All right," Nate says, and smacks his hands together. "Let's go steal a con artist."

It's Hardison POV, and I think they were spot on with his characterization, including all the geeky computer references I just know he uses in his internal monologue. There's some light threesome undertones, but otherwise gen. And completely awesome. (Have I mentioned that yet?)

Also, Parker!!

I would totally love to see a sequel coming, but overall I think it's better as a standalone - you can choose the ending of the caper yourself. Though I wouldn't pass up some Team-Burke-meets-Team-Leverage hijinks.

Go. Read. Marvel at the Awesome!

Art for another Big Bang I participated in - [livejournal.com profile] crossbigbang

Fic Title: The Soul Job by Jedi Buttercup
Artist: Lyl ([livejournal.com profile] lyl_devil)
Fandoms: Angel/Leverage
Content Warnings: Does lack of colour count?
Spoilers: Very, very mild ones for the story and the canonical events discussed within.
Artists Notes: I feel I must apologize for the minimal use of Christian Kane in the art - there's really no excuse for my behaviour. :)

Author's Summary: It's been a long time since Lindsey McDonald and Eliot Spencer went their separate ways... but if ever a man was in need of the leverage their team could apply, it was Eliot's brother.

Go read her excellent story which can be found here: The Soul Job

The Time Has Come To Be Gone by [livejournal.com profile] jujuberry136 - SPN/Criminal Minds
Summary: When Aaron Hotchner stepped into the interrogation room to interview one of the FBI’s most wanted unexpectedly apprehended earlier in the afternoon, he never thought the evening would end with bloodshed and rock references.

This was apparently part of the bau_bigbang that I didn't know existed, but am so very, very glad does. It's current for both shows (before the season premieres), and so very in character for everyone involved - though the characters of both shows have taken hits this season so far, but you can't blame the author for that.

Really, if the crossover aspect doesn't get you, then the summary should. It's totally and completely awesome!

Go. Read!!

Abnormal Psychology by [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve - SGA/Bones
It's Dr Sweets and Sheppard! Cause someone had to replace Kate on Atlantis.

And again...

A Sam Adams Moment by [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve - SGA/Bones
Major Booth, the 'other' Colonel Cam, Dr Brennen and Angela = newest team on Atlantis!!

Really, why aren't there more stories like these?
lyl_devil: (Default)
That's right everybody, it's that time of year - time for the APOCALYPSE! Or APOCALYPSES...apocalypsi?

Whatever. It's [livejournal.com profile] apocalyptothon posting time, where writer's end the world in as many ways as only fandom can imagine.

I've only been through a handful of them, but here are some recs for the good ones...
(Do I really need to warn you all about the rampant death and angst to be found in most of these?)

Bodily Atrocities of the New Millenium by [livejournal.com profile] spoonyriffic - NCIS/House
Ever wanted House and Gibbs to meet? Well, here it is. Beware the Gibbs/DiNozzo, if you can't stand that ship.

When You Are Done by [livejournal.com profile] perryvic - SPN
This one has great character voices, and uses the women found in the series throughout the whole story. Part of the whole 'Lazarus'-thing sort of tweaked me wrong (it felt very self-indulgent/Mary Sue-ish at points), but the characters were written so well I got over it pretty quick. (The Bella-Jo bits are just great fun to read!) I don't think I need to warn for severe religious overtones in this, as this is all about the Heaven/Hell apocalypse the show's been leading up to this last year.

Killing Time in the Shade by [livejournal.com profile] caitn - NCIS
This one was pitch-perfect NCIS. It was a fun, humourous fic that was NCIS to the core.

Apocalypse Now and Then by [livejournal.com profile] monimala - The Middleman
I have been waiting forever to read some good MM fic, and this one didn't disappoint. Wendy was her usual unflappable self (mostly), MM was alternately calm and chagrined (and quite a bit of blushing, too), and Ida is her glorious, insulting, post-menopausal robot self. And the apocalypse is a perfect MM apocalypse, complete with improbable bad "guys" that destroy good cliches.

I'll post more of the good ones as I read them! Enjoy!

SGA

Orpheus by [livejournal.com profile] miss_porcupine - Gen
Summary: In the annals of SGC history, it will forever be debated whether the decision to remove then-Major John Sheppard from the Atlantis expedition was an act of great folly or one of great fortune.

This is yet another great story from one of the best in SGA fandom. It's completely Gen and incredibly long (~52,000 words). I remember reading the start of this 2 years ago, and wished she'd added more too it then. This story is that wish fulfilled. It's a 'what-if' AU: What if John Sheppard hadn't been allowed to go back to Atlantis at the end of Season 1? The story riffs off the Intruder ep (the one with the Wraith virus that takes over the ship).

Doctor Who

Cladogenesis by [livejournal.com profile] omphalos - NC-17
This is the same author that brought us 'New Dawn Fades', the Doctor/Master epic which I recced [here], only this time it's a Master/Donna epic.

Yes, that's right. The Master and Donna Noble!! And there are only 6/12 chapters done, but they're really, really long, well written chapters.

This takes place after season 4 in DW, so if you haven't seen the final episode yet, don't read this if you don't want to get spoiled. Seriously. I'm not kidding here. The Master is back like we all knew he would be (can't keep a good bad guy down), and he's essentially met his match in Donna. I will warn for some raunchy Donna/Master sex, and double warn for the Doctor/Turlough scenes, as they get very vicious and violent and dark. I kid you not.

What I like about this writer, is that she (I assume 'she') doesn't stick to New Who, but uses any and all Old Who characters/plots/ideas along the way. I barely remember much of the Old Who eps (CBC kept playing the Fourth and Fifth Doctors well into the 80's), but I find I'm not at much of a disadvantage for not knowing who they are. (Google usually answers most of my questions, anyway.)

Go forth and read, my minions!! AHAHHAAHHAHAHAHAAHA!!!
lyl_devil: (Default)
Seeing as I'm out of my scary headspace for the moment (which [livejournal.com profile] strangevisitor7 may or may not appreciate as it will probably leave my psycho Numb3rs AU half finished for a while), I thought I'd link you all to some stories that have made me smile/laugh.

Unfortunately, they're mostly SPN fics, as those are what I've been reading recently.

A Blog, He Wrote by [livejournal.com profile] mimblexwimble Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 ... Part 5 to come
Summary: Sam loses his laptop and Lucifer starts a blog. What else is an evil overlord supposed to do in his free time?

This is some of the crackiest stuff I've read in years. It had me laughing hysterically, which made me regret reading this at school where people look at you funny. This is written in the form of blog posts (multiple posts per part), including comments from various ... people ... with 'interesting' usernames. I'm ashamed to say it took me until Part 4 to realize who LusciousLocks and PowertothePie were, so I had to go back and re-read the entire thing from part 1 again. It was even more hilarious the second time through!

You Break It, You Bought It by [livejournal.com profile] kellifer_fic
“Everything within the confines of this Impala is property of Dean Winchester,” Dean announced...
Really, this one has to be read to be fully appreciated.

The Pen Is Mouthier Than The Sword by [livejournal.com profile] kellifer_fic
If you need more than this, you obviously don't feel the Dean love:
Sam is only gone a few minutes, but it seems that’s long enough for Dean to get into an argument with a ketchup bottle.

And for all the Doctor Who people out there:

The Ten Weddings of Donna Noble by [livejournal.com profile] netgirl_y2k
Author's summary: Donna has to marry the Doctor. All of them.
My summary: It's Donna. And she has to marry the Doctor. All 10 of him. Do I really need to say more?

Hunting through [livejournal.com profile] epic_recs found me this:

What The Ducklings Did On Their Summer Vacation by [livejournal.com profile] roga - SGA/House

The Ducklings in Atlantis. Without House. And none of them are cowed by McKay because, you know, House. It's hilarious and a fun read, and I highly recommend you go over there and read this. :)
lyl_devil: (Default)
Well, now that [livejournal.com profile] apocalyptothon 2008 is here, I thought I'd rec some of the amazing stories I've read over the past 2 days.

Do I really need to warn about rampant death and destruction in every single story?

Danse Macabre by [livejournal.com profile] valderys - Torchwood (Ianto/Jack - NC-17)
This is a day in the life of Ianto Jones and takes place after season 2. I like the format of this story - how Ianto marks his day by the precise time of each task and objective. The format is also a tool showing Ianto's coping mechanism for the end of the world. The apocalypse is subtle at the beginning, and explained more at the end. It's a very slow moving piece, but well worth the read.

This is What Happened by [livejournal.com profile] whitetower - Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles
Again, this is another story with a unique format. I really liked this one, especially the way the author captured Sarah's decision making process. This is a zombie apocalypse, and in true Terminator fashion, has the Connor's being general badasses like normal (no Derek, unfortunately). The Skynet storyline gets pulled into this as well, and though I think it just makes everything more complicated, it's interesting to read.

Migratory Birds by [livejournal.com profile] nekare - Supernatural/X-men movieverse
This is a story of two brothers, on different sides of a war. Sam and Dean fight, but for different reasons and for different sides. This is an AU of Supernatural, but works well with Sam and Dean's characterizations. I like how the two universes are crossed, and how the characters' interactions feel real.

My TiVO Gets Me by [livejournal.com profile] stellar_dust - The Daily Show/The Colbert Report (JS/SC - PG-13)
I don't usually read fanfic about either of these shows (with the exception of the Colbert/Harry Potter one that had me snorting water out my nose), but the first line of this caught my attention before I could delete it from my inbox:

To everyone's surprise, Our Robot Overlords did absolutely nothing to stifle the news.

It goes on from there, with a TiVO underground and a crying Anderson Cooper....and if you can ignore the small mentions of Jon/Steven slash, you'll probably enjoy this.

That's all for now. I still haven't gone through any of the Firefly fics yet, so there still may be some more. I also posted my own fic, a Burn Notice apocalypse. However, since I had trouble finishing it on time, I only posted the unbetaed version. When I get around to polishing it up some more, I'll post it here.

Enjoy!

More Things in Heaven and Earth by Anonymous - Numb3rs/DW
This is Larry. And the Ninth Doctor. This is Larry meeting the Ninth Doctor, and it is written so perfectly Larry. I really don't think I can emphasize enough just how brilliantly the author captured Larry in this piece. Go, read, and see what I mean.

Agent Afloat Atlantis by [livejournal.com profile] mhalachaiswords - NCIS/SGA
This story picks up directly after the season 5 finale of NCIS, and into the first few episodes of S5 SGA. This is Ziva-centric, which while I normally don't particularly like, I'm in love with her right here. This is about Ziva finding a place for herself in another galaxy, finding something to live and fight for, and learning to heal from the past. I adore it.

This is the story I have been waiting years for. Seriously. I've been waiting for someone to realize that Atlantis has Marines, and that NCIS is probably wondering why so many are being KIA-ed in Colorado, but no one has. This isn't that fic, sorry, but it is a story about being reassigned and fills my desperate need of quality NCIS/SGA crossovers, coming in at over 40k words.
Only the first 2 parts are up as yet, but the rest are definitely coming and I am anxiously awaiting.

Dr Horrible - Act II

Verdict: Dr Horrible is my newest supervillain love!! Depending on how the final Act goes, he may displace Spike. I'm just sayin'.

As for Captain Hammer - I think Nathan Fillion is capturing him perfectly. It takes a lot of talent to come off that cheesy and lame on purpose.

PS - I love Neil Patrick Harris!!
lyl_devil: (Default)
Finally! Dr Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog - Episode 1 is online. Hilarious! Neil Patrick Harris! Nathan Fillion! Breaking out into song!

Since you were all so good enough to suffer through my whiny rant yesterday, I shall reward you all today with a few recs I've been holding on to for awhile. I got the first two from [personal profile] honorh, so if you watch her journal they'll seem familiar.

All In A Days Work by miss_baxter - Super Temp Donna Noble. Crossover with Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Perfect Donna and wonderful HHGTTG. These kinds of stories illustrate my utter and complete love of Donna.

The Life Cycle of the Cracking Mosh Toad by [profile] lordshiva - Anya (Buffy) and Tenth Doctor (DW). Wonderful voices. Just a really great read. You totally know you want to read about Anya and the Doctor. Come on!

Chuck vs The Crazy Alien Vampires by [profile] fiareynne - Chuck/SGA. It really works. Really. I like Chuck in this, and I like how the plot is moving along. I will warn that it is slash (Chuck/Casey, implied/pre Rodney/John), but it kinda, mostly works. I really like this because of how the author has meshed John Casey with Dave Dixon (mostly realistic). This is a fun read.

Real Men Don't Make Cheesecake by [personal profile] trollprincess - SPN Most of the hardcore SPN fans on my flist have probably seen this, but I thought I'd rec it just for good measure, because really, teenage Dean taking home ec is never not funny. This is a really great read, and I wish there were more fics like this out there.

That is all. Soon, I shall return with actual fic. I hope. In the mean time, enjoy!

Today the [livejournal.com profile] tardis_bigbang site went live. There are 23 stories of varying degrees of length, and there seems to be something for everyone. I hope. There are mixtures of Classic Who, New Who, the Adventures (Eighth Doctor radio adventures), Torchwood, the Sarah Jane Adventures, and whatever else has ever come out of the Who universe. These are long and involved stories, with art made to match each adventure.

The site can be found -> [HERE]

My current favourite (and really, I've only had time to read 1 fully) is this:

The Idiot's Guide to Foiling Alien Invasions by [livejournal.com profile] netgirl_y2k
Author's summary: Jackie and Mickey save the day by bickering, drinking lots of tea and spending a lot of time in the pub in the middle of the day.

Why I think people should read it: It's 20,000 words of Jackie and Mickey save the world - really just the British Government - with wonderful cameos by Sarah Jane, UNIT, Donna, Rose and the Doctor (Ninth). It takes place in the first season of the New Who, and really should be labelled as more-than-moderately cracktastic, simply for the premise alone. But along the way there are some great lines and fabulous situations. Here's a few of my favourites:

"We know who you are, Mr Bond," said Mickey. As soon as he said that he felt as though he should be sitting on a swivel chair stroking a white cat.

and this...

How was it that he could use the PC in his flat to nick a medium range missile from the British Army but he couldn't change the ring tone on his mobile from the Crazy Frog?

and then there's this...

Mickey's girlfriend had been pinched by a time travelling mad man and he'd spent the last few days as part of an alcohol based resistance against the evil forces of the Burger King aliens. He thought people had pretty much lost the right to tell him what he would or would not believe.

On top of all this, there's some truly fabulous art work to go along with the story. Really well done character pictures and wonderful cover art. Check it out. Really. :)
lyl_devil: (Default)
I've been reading some of the stories that are coming out of [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang, and so far they've been pretty predictable. Wincest and RPS seem to rule the day, but there are a few Gen stories. I've been waiting patiently (or not-so-patiently, whatever) for one that I could rec. And I finally found it.

Infrangible Road by [livejournal.com profile] ddayspring

This is an AU, but the best kind of AU. In this universe, John realized exactly what he was putting his kids through by hunting full-time, and came to the conclusion that Mary would have kicked his ass for it. Essentially. So, he raises the boys in Lawrence. That's about the only difference. He still hunts part-time, and raises Sam and Dean the same way, but with that element of stability that was never on the show.

This is a long, long story. Seriously. It caps out at ~48,500 words, and I wanted the author to write moremoremore. It has sucked a good chunk of my day away, and will probably take most of my night as I re-read and fall in love over and over again.

The author has Sam as Sam, Dean as Dean, and John as John, though a little less intense. Sam and Dean still have that close relationship that we all watch the show for, and it's interesting to see it in everyday life as opposed to their nomad hunting existence.

I like what she's done with Dean, keeping his essential character but filling him out in ways that seem so obvious, but are rarely seen. He still flirts and charms and cons his way through life, but there's a more ordered feel to his existence than simply hunting.

There are some problems when the author switches character POVs, because you often can't tell, or don't realize it's happened until you get a few paragraphs into it, but that can be overlooked.

Seriously, check this one out. If only to have the mental image of Dean wearing a --SPOILERSPOILER--. :D
lyl_devil: (Default)
So here's the thing. I've been patiently - and not so patiently - waiting for this story to be finished, mostly so I could rec this baby. And read the ending too, but I figure that's a given. :)

Lifelines by [livejournal.com profile] jinxed_wood
(link goes to final part, but is linked to all previous chapters)

As some of you may remember from [here] I recced her stuff before - actually, I recced all her stuff as a byproduct of that single rec. Well, she has not disappointed this time around, either. Her latest work, which is so totally amazing, is a crossover between Doctor Who and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Essentially, Martha meets up with Derek Reese during the Year-that-wasn't as she's crossing the US spreading her story. John and Sarah are dead, but Derek is still alive and kicking in the new, post-apocalyptic world, which isn't happening the way it was suppose to. This is Derek and Martha the entire way, and [livejournal.com profile] jinxed_wood managed to keep everything on the 'sort-of friends' level, even though it could have easily slipped into a Martha/Derek fic. (Which is good, because Romana has first dibs on Martha, apparently. :D)

The characters are spot on, the motivations totally work for me, and I end up loving Martha so much at the end (more than the show ever did, really).

This story is a prime example of why I read crossovers, people. Go, read, and bug her for more: she's apparently decided not to write any more in this universe until the season premiere of T:SCC, which I think is just wrong. Where would fandom be if we all worried about getting Jossed?

I know I'm spamming y'all tonight, but these totally deserve it!

I'm not really one for trolling the fanvid part of fandom, but every now and then someone on my flist will rec something, and if I like it, will go in search of more of their stuff.

Tonight's rec-fest started with...

Papa Don't Preach by [livejournal.com profile] fan_eunice and [livejournal.com profile] greensilver
It's DW/TW, and I'm just surprised that no one's put Captain Jack and Madonna together before. They actually started this before Something Borrowed aired, and took that episode as a sign from fate.
(Note: If you haven't seen the end of S3 of DW and don't know who that blonde guy is...just know he's evil.)

Next I found something for all the Richie fans on my flist: (should make you all squee and whimper at the same time)

Scroll down to Forever Young by [livejournal.com profile] fan_eunice
I swear this one should be used to introduce all newbies to the joy that is Richie Ryan.

Then I found this gem, for the Giles fans on my flist (though there aren't a lot of you):

My Generation by [livejournal.com profile] greensilver
It's the BtVS episode Band Candy in all its glorious delinquent fun!

And that is all.

(Though if you want to get your SPN creep-factor for the *year* check out War Drums by izzerial and Ritual Habitual by [livejournal.com profile] popcornleader)

It's Day 13 of [livejournal.com profile] 14valentines and the topic is Arts & Athletics. The post can be found -> [here]

So close to the end, and I'm lagging. My carefully worked out schedule has empty slots for today's recs, so I decided to simply list some of my favourites that are the only reason I ever return to some fandoms.

A Thin Line & Friend or Foe? by LittleBit
Alias/Roswell - It's several years after Liz left Roswell behind (mid-season 3-ish I think). She's offered a job at Credit Dauphin, and ends up meeting Sark. (Liz/Sark)

Finding Ulysses by Peachykin
Roswell - Several years after the end of the series, and Liz finds Michael in New Orleans. (Liz/Michael)

That's Dame Rose Tyler to You by [livejournal.com profile] aibhinn
Doctor Who - Rose saves the Doctor. (Excellent Rose piece.)

Dark Directed by Fearthainn
Harry Potter - A chance encounter tangles Ginny Weasley's life with that of the most unlikely of people--Draco Malfoy. (Draco/Ginny)

Hok'taur by [livejournal.com profile] spastasmagoria
Doctor Who/SG-1 - Nirrti's experiments into building a super-host have lead her to a certain Time Lord. SG-1 and the Doctor stop her from creating a host capable of command over time and space.

Eight Days a Week & Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds by [livejournal.com profile] skidmo_fic
Torchwood/SGA - While in Cardiff, Lorne meets some interesting people. (Ianto/Lorne)

In The Mood by [livejournal.com profile] chicafrom3
Torchwood - Jack and Tosh are stranded in the '40s. (Jack/Tosh)

And that's it for today. I have no clue what I'll be posting tomorrow, but my recs are done.

If you've found you want more, check out my del.icio.us bookmarks.
