EDIT: Title: Road to Pegasus
So, I finally got a paid account, and after going icon-wild, I decided to post another part in my never-ending sga/smallville saga.
FYI - the parts I already have written are:
Rising (1.01-1.02) - 6800 words
Hide and Seek (1.03) - 9600 words
Thirty Eight Minutes (1.04) - 4600 words(unfinished)
The Brotherhood (1.16) - 1600 words(unfinished)
I have ideas for practically every other episode, just haven't gotten to writing them.
So, here's part two of Rising-Alt...
Episode: Rising (1.01 & 1.02)
Author: Lyl
Rating: PG
Summary: A journey begins.
Note: Dr. Weir's gate room speech is taken directly from the episode.
Prologue
Part One
Two
(During Season 1 - Rising)
“Can I have everyone’s attention, please.” A voice carried up from the Gate room.
“Jack.” greeted Hammond as he entered the Gate control room.
“General.” replied O’Neill, only slightly surprised to see the Air Force General in the base, though given the circumstances, he should have expected it. “Wasn’t sure you’d come.”
“Bureaucrats and budget meetings can be rescheduled, but this only happens once.” he replied, his gaze firmly fixed on the mass of people at the base of the Stargate ramp below him, avidly listening to Dr. Elizabeth Weir speak.
“. . .about to try to make a connection. We have been unable to predict exactly how much power this is going to take so we may only get the once chance . . .”
“Just wasn’t sure you wanted to watch her leave.” he responded, knowing how much the General cared about his oldest granddaughter. Jack was one of only a few officers at the base that knew of the two’s relationship, due to his accompanying Hammond when he went to retrieve her from the Feds hands years ago. The older man may not show it to the world, but Jack knew just how much Chloe meant to her grandfather.
“I wouldn’t miss this for the world.” he replied, finally locating the blonde head he was looking for. He had never quite gotten over how striking she looked all kitted out. True, her dress uniform made her seem older somehow, but seeing her in the grey and black BDU’s, armed to the teeth. . . it made him smile in familial pride. She looked dangerous and authoritative, a combination he hadn’t thought he’d ever see a few years ago.
“ . . .you volunteered for this mission, and you represent over a dozen countries. You are the worlds best and brightest. And in light of the adventure we are about to embark on, you’re also the bravest. I hope we all return one day . . .”
“I never would have expected the girl in that hospital bed to one day come to this.” O’Neill commented.
“I almost wish she was going into combat.” Hammond said, watching as Chloe gave her full attention to Dr. Weir, who was still speaking from midway up the Gate ramp. “At least then I would have a better chance of seeing her again.”
“Begin the dialling sequence.”
“Don’t count them out, yet. Have faith that they’ll find a way back.” O’Neill commented, watching at the auburn haired Doctor made her way into the control room to supervise the dialling.
“General Hammond. I’m surprised to see you here.” commented Dr. Weir upon entering the command centre.
“This was too important to miss, Doctor.” was his only reply. He noticed that Chloe was now giving last minute instructions to her small team, all of them in full gear like her. While her primary role was to see to the equipment and management of the researchers areas, she was still an Air Force officer and was therefore required to be part of the security teams in the initial excursion. Once the area was secure, she would dedicate herself and her team to setting up work areas. At least, that was the original plan - recent events had caused the young officer to take on even more responsibility than was first decided.
He was so busy watching the activity in the Embarkation room, that he was surprised to hear O’Neill speaking to Dr. Weir.
“. . . you have a go.”
To which the good Doctor practically bolted from the Control Room in her excitement. Dr. McKay following at a more sedate pace, but not by much.
Hammond watched as the team members made their way through the shimmering event horizon of the Stargate, each carrying or moving crates of equipment as they stepped through. He was vaguely aware of Dr. Daniel Jackson attempting a last ditch effort to convince General O’Neill to let him go with the expedition, but knew it wouldn’t fly. Almost his whole attention was on the blonde figure that was making her way up the ramp, her team the last to enter the event horizon.
Before stepping through, she turned and looked up to the Control Room, meeting his gaze evenly before raising a hand in farewell and taking that last, big step. They had said most of their goodbye’s earlier, but it wasn’t the same as actually watching her go through the Stargate. It was most likely the last time he’d ever see her, and it saddened him more than he’d thought possible.
“I know she’s been busy since accepting the post-“ commented Jack, trying to find some way to comfort his superior, but not quite knowing what to say.
“She made an effort to be there for our weekly dinner.” Hammond told him, cherishing those dinners more than he could say.
“You know her, General?” asked Daniel, managing to take his mind off his disappointment to focus on the conversation going on around him. He was only vaguely familiar with the female officer who had waved to the retired General, but knew she had been around the base for a few years. She was one of the personnel that wasn’t noticed, yet without them the base wouldn’t function as well as it did.
“That’s my eldest granddaughter.” he replied before turning to leave the base.
The house would be empty without her.

I need some constructive criticism, if you're interested.
Email me, and I'll send you the rest of this installement, and all of the second.( lyldevilca at yahoo dot ca <-- you know what to do)
